KP 3 is often excellent.

They spend days waiting for KP 6 or KP 7 because that’s what social media tells them to do.
Meanwhile, experienced guides are already out enjoying spectacular Aurora displays beneath a perfectly ordinary KP 2 forecast.

The KP forecast might not have changed much.
But Bz has.

If the clearest sky happens to be in Norway, we stay in Norway.
If Finland offers better conditions, we cross the border.
The destination never matters.
The weather does.
Mistake #5 – Looking at the Forecast Only Once
Forecasts change.
Clouds move.
Solar activity changes.
Bz changes.
Weather models update.

It’s common for our route to change several times as new information becomes available.

Aurora Forecast Checklist
Before heading out, ask yourself these questions.
✅ Is the KP Index at least 2 or higher for Northern Norway?
✅ Is Bz negative or becoming more negative?
✅ Is solar wind stable or increasing?
✅ Where is the lowest cloud cover tonight?
✅ What does Yr show for the next few hours?
✅ Are weather models improving or getting worse?
✅ Do you have warm clothing for several hours outdoors?
✅ Are you bringing a tripod? Even modern smartphones produce much better Aurora photos when mounted on a stable tripod.
If most of these answers look positive, tonight is definitely worth trying.
If not…
Don’t panic.
Tomorrow’s forecast may look completely different.

Can You Predict the Northern Lights?
This is probably the most common question we receive.
The answer is both yes and no.
We can predict the probability of seeing the Northern Lights.
We cannot predict exactly what will happen.
Think of it like the weather.
Meteorologists can tell you there’s an 80% chance of rain tomorrow.
They can’t tell you exactly which minute the first raindrop will fall on your house.
Aurora forecasting works in much the same way.
Every forecast simply helps us improve the odds.
The better the weather data.
The better the solar activity.

But nature always has the final say.
